The Iranian regime has treated American hesitation as an opening for decades. Proxies attack shipping and partners, enrichment continues, and every round of talks buys more time rather than compliance. A message that the other side will lose, and lose quickly, breaks that pattern. Managed conflict and endless negotiation have already been tested. They produced more missiles, more militias, and more leverage for Tehran.

Credible strength changes the math inside the regime and among its clients. When the cost of adventurism is immediate instead of theoretical, the incentive to keep probing disappears. Energy routes, regional partners, and American forces should not remain permanent targets while diplomats search for language that sounds balanced. Pressure that is real, not performative, is what has historically forced recalculation. National interest is straightforward here. A theocratic government that exports chaos and pursues nuclear breakout capacity does not respond to lectures. It responds to the certainty that it cannot win. Ending the game on American terms, rather than stretching it across another decade of managed decline, is the only approach that treats sovereignty and deterrence as more than slogans. That is the standard that should govern the relationship.
