Federal agents searched Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Washington home on Monday, and the episode deserves attention from Americans of every political view. It shows how much power the White House holds and how few obstacles still stand in its way.
The agents came from Homeland Security Investigations, the investigative arm of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Officials called the search part of “an ongoing federal criminal investigation.” Under President Donald Trump, the unit has turned more of its attention to protesters and immigration fraud.
Administration officials have raised that charge against Omar, a Minnesota Democrat, for months. In March, Vice President JD Vance said, “We actually think that Ilhan Omar definitely committed immigration fraud against the United States of America.”
Last month, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said “something’s going to happen” in her case. Sources say the inquiry centers on immigration paperwork her late father filled out when she was a child. Older marriage claims have circulated too, and Omar denies wrongdoing.
A search of a sitting member of Congress’ home, roughly three weeks before an election and after long-running threats to strip her of citizenship, is a serious escalation. It also sends a worrying signal to naturalized citizens who disagree with the administration.
The episode also shows how little is left to hold power in check. A judge signed the warrant. The courts have allowed much of the administration’s immigration agenda to go forward, and activists tied to a 2025 protest at a Texas ICE detention center, where one defendant was convicted of attempted m*rder, have received prison terms of 30 to 100 years.
Even if Democrats win in November, Congress seems unlikely to offer more than statements of condemnation. Impeachment and new laws to defund ICE deserve a serious look.
The inflammatory language around the case adds to the concern. In a Truth Social post last week, Trump wrote, “Minnesota is being taken over by Somali Immigrants.The Somalians should not be allowed to get away with what they are doing. They view you as weak and stupid people. Fight back Minnesota, fight back!”
